Hybrid role

Inverted Winger

A winger stationed on the opposite flank to their stronger foot, so cutting inside onto that foot is the first instinct rather than a fallback option.

Train for this role →

In possession

Holds the touchline just long enough to pin the full-back wide, then drives inside onto the stronger foot to shoot, thread a pass, or combine centrally. The cut inside is the main threat, not a plan B.

Out of possession

Tracks back down the same flank as a conventional winger, though recovering from central attacking positions back to a wide starting point takes extra running.

How to play it

  • Hug the touchline just long enough to pin the opposition full-back wide before cutting inside
  • Look up before the cut: the inside lane can be a shot, a pass, or a dribble depending on what the defense gives away
  • Combine with an overlapping full-back who supplies the width just vacated
  • Track back down the same flank defensively, even though the attacking threat comes from inside

Common mistakes

  • Cutting inside on the same predictable rhythm, letting defenders jump the run
  • Drifting inside so early that the team loses width before the full-back can overlap
  • Neglecting the outside foot entirely, becoming one-footed and easy to show onto the weaker side
