RB

Right-Back

The mirror of the left-back on the right flank: tracks opposing wingers, tucks in centrally when the ball is far away, and supports attacks by overlapping or underlapping.

Train for this role →

In possession

Provides width down the right, overlapping or underlapping the winger ahead of them to create passing lanes and crossing opportunities.

Out of possession

Tracks the opposition's left winger one-on-one and tucks infield to support the back line when the ball is on the far side.

How to play it

  • Time overlapping runs so you arrive as an option, not before the ball is ready
  • Tuck inside when play is on the opposite flank to keep the defensive line compact
  • Show wide players onto their weaker foot rather than inviting a cut inside
  • Recognize when to hold back for defensive cover versus when it's safe to join the attack

Common mistakes

  • Getting caught upfield after an attack breaks down, leaving space in behind
  • Diving into tackles instead of jockeying wide players toward the touchline
  • Standing too narrow and leaving the winger in front isolated out wide
