Width and Depth: Stretching the Defense

The more of the pitch a defense has to cover, the more gaps appear somewhere in it.

4-3-3's Width

Wide forwards holding the touchline force the opposition's back line to stretch across the full width of the pitch, or leave the flank open entirely.

Where Width Creates Space

Pulling defenders toward the touchline opens exactly this kind of central space: the pocket a false 9 or an attacking midfielder is looking to exploit.

Primarily active in the attacking third, central area of the pitch.

Narrow vs. Wide Attack

Compare an attack that stays compact and central against one that stretches to both touchlines. Neither is automatically better. It depends on where the defense is weakest.

Primarily active in the attacking third, central area of the pitch.

Try it

On the pitch explorer, compare 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 Diamond. The Diamond trades width for central numbers, so look at how much touchline space is left uncovered.
